It was the vision of equal rights for all people that inspired Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to crusade for civil rights. It was the vision of a computer on every desk and in every home that moved Bill Gates to start a computer company. It was the vision of greater discovery that motivated George Washington Carver to discover over 300 different uses for the peanut. It was the vision of socially connecting people that prompted Mark Zuckerberg to start the social media giant Facebook. Vision demands change.

What is vision?

Vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future that gives a man direction for his life. The man becomes so committed to the vision that he will pursue it despite any obstacles or challenges. It is the ingredient that launches a man out of stagnation and into forward action.

Visions originate in the heart and mind of a man who is frustrated and tired of the way things are in contrast to the way he believes things could and should be.

I love learning and talking about the power of a vision because it’s a vision that drives me to overcome the obstacles that I face to do the work I do now. I’ve experienced the power of vision in my own life and I know what is possible when you see it and act on it. If you look within yourself and look out into the world, you too will know that you possess the greatest power in the universe: the power to see a vision for your now and future and create it.

A man of vision sees what’s possible and then takes the next steps to create it. Every invention, project, creation, and transformation starts with an idea, an imagination and a vision of what’s possible. History shows us that if you can see it, you can create it.

Live your vision out

If you have a vision, then you also have the power to live it out. A visionary man tap’s into the power of his vision and finds a way to move it forward while connecting others to it. But, in order to move your vision forward and get others to follow it, you must be able to articulate and communicate your vision in a simple, clear, bold, and compelling way.

Helen Keller was asked, “What would be worse than being born blind?” She replied, “To have sight without vision.” Sadly, too many men are trying to lead without a vision. A man of vision possesses two things; he knows where he is going and he is able to persuade others to follow.

Men can spend more time planning a weekend sporting event or what they are going to wear on a night out on the town then identifying what outcomes they want to see in the major areas of their life. This kind of mindset can lead men to wander aimlessly from day to day, week to week, year to year with no clear direction in mind.

For this reason, I believe men should take the time to realize their vision to give their life direction. Here are five things a personal vision provides to elevate your life. Get ready to take hold of your vision and impact your world!

5 things vision provides

1) Vision provides direction.

The CEO has a business plan to guide the company. A football coach has a game plan to lead his team. A vision is your road map to get you from where you are to where you desire to be. It helps a leader live for today while preparing for the future. Vision keeps a leader on course during turbulent times or unexpected setbacks. Do you have a vision that directs your life? If not, start developing one.

2) Vision provides action.

Once you have a vision it will allow you to say “yes” to what matters most and “no” to those activities that sidetrack you from living your vision. A vision keeps a man focused with the end result in mind. He will not allow life’s distractions or discouragement derail his vision because he understands that an authentic vision provides all the motivation he needs to take action. What distractions to living your vision do you need to say “no” to?

3) Vision provides energy.

A clear, focused vision energizes a person. He receives energy from the picture of where he is going and it gives him strength for the task. He constantly keeps the vision in the forefront of his mind. He dreams about it at night and during the day. He talks about it and he acts upon it. Vision is the spark that transforms stagnancy into action.

4) Vision provides focus.

The CEO has a business plan to guide the company. A football coach has a game plan to lead his team. A focused vision is your road map to get you from where you are to where you desire to be. With all of life’s distractions, it can be hard to focus. Acting on a focused vision helps you work on what is important and not get caught up in life’s trivial things.

5) Vision provides endurance.

Your vision not only gives energy for the task but it gives endurance.  Endurance is the ability to keep on going even when things get tough. A clear vision will fortify you to push forward when you want to quit and gives you the ‘staying power’ when you want to throw in the towel and quit.

“The most pathetic person in the world is someone who has sight, but has no vision.” Helen Keller
